Louis Armstrong, also known as “Satchmo”, is a name that needs no introduction. Born in 1901 in New Orleans, he grew up in poverty and hardship, but he turned to music as a means of escaping his troubles. His talent and charisma soon earned him a place in the pantheon of jazz greats, and he went on to become one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Louis Armstrong grew up in a rough neighborhood in New Orleans, and he turned to music as a way of staying out of trouble. He started playing the cornet at the age of 13, and he quickly developed a reputation as a talented musician. He played with some of the best bands in New Orleans, including the famous King Oliver Band, and he soon became known for his virtuosity and his unique style.
Interesting fact: Louis Armstrong got his start playing on riverboats that traveled up and down the Mississippi River, playing for passengers and working with some of the best musicians of his day.
